Designing AI for scale, flexibility, and global relevance
To ensure adoption at scale, building trust in AI was our first priority. We designed every interaction with transparency at its core, so learners and administrators clearly understood how the AI processed information, made decisions, and where its limitations lay. This openness created an environment where users could engage with confidence, knowing the system wasn’t a “black box.”
By embedding transparency into the interface and communication design, Degreed’s AI became not just a tool, but a trusted guide. This approach fostered meaningful engagement, reduced resistance, and enabled more impactful learning outcomes across diverse organizations.
We recognized that effective learning requires more than accurate answers. It demands conversations that feel supportive, adaptive, and human. Our design approach focused on two pillars. First, we blended conversational AI with intuitive UI and UX cues that guided learners seamlessly across both voice and text interactions.
Second, we designed conversations that were emotionally intelligent and sensitive to context, ensuring tone, phrasing, and responsiveness matched user needs. To achieve this, we crafted detailed conversational flows and scripts, iterating closely with developers to refine clarity, empathy, and coherence. The result was AI that could engage in fluid, context-aware learning interactions that felt natural, helpful, and trustworthy.
Every organization has its own culture, language, and learning philosophy, which meant Degreed’s AI had to feel adaptable and personalized. We designed a modular AI framework that allowed clients to create their own custom AI coaches, trained on the organization’s specific knowledge bases.
Beyond data, we enabled clients to configure tone, vocabulary, and even multilingual support, ensuring the AI reflected their unique voice and style. This adaptability allows companies to deliver training that feels deeply relevant and culturally aligned. By giving organizations the ability to control how the AI coach “spoke” and interacted, we ensured long-term trust, engagement, and adoption at a global scale.
